A More Excellent Way
Week theme: Spiritual Gifts
Today we enter a courtroom.
The issue before the court is not whether spiritual gifts are real.
Nor whether God gives them.
Everyone agrees that He does.
The question before the court is far more unsettling:
Is love really necessary...or are spiritual gifts enough?
The church at Corinth possessed remarkable gifts. Yet it was divided by pride, jealousy, and competition.
So today, one final question must be answered.
Which is greater—spiritual gifts or love?
The Court of Divine Wisdom is now in session.
THE COURT OF DIVINE WISDOM
The People vs. Love
All rise!
The Court of Divine Wisdom is now in session.
The Honorable Judge, The Word of God, presiding.
The charge is as follows:
Love claims to be "a more excellent way." The prosecution contends that spiritual gifts alone are sufficient for the church's mission.
Opening Statement
Prosecutor
Your Honor,
The church needs action.
It needs preaching.
Teaching.
Prophecy.
Faith.
Knowledge.
Miracles.
Tongues.
These gifts build the church and demonstrate the Spirit's power.
Love is admirable—but is it essential?
Can a church not flourish if it possesses every spiritual gift?
Today we intend to prove that the gifts themselves are enough.
The prosecution calls its first witness.
Witness One — Knowledge
Knowledge, what do you contribute to God's church?
I teach truth.
I expose error.
I help believers understand God's Word.
Without me, many would be deceived.
Then surely the church cannot survive without you.
I am certainly important.
Cross-Examination
Knowledge...Paul says, "Knowledge puffs up..."
You're brilliant, so finish the verse.
"...but love builds up."
Can someone know the truth...and still wound people with pride?
Yes.
Without love, I become a reason to boast instead of a means to bless.
Witness Two — Prophecy
Prosecutor
Prophecy, what is your purpose?
I proclaim God's message.
I call His people back to Him.
A great gift indeed.
Cross-Examination
Paul says even if someone has the gift of prophecy and understands all mysteries...
without love… what is that person?
Nothing.
Louder.
NOTHING
Witness Three — Faith
Faith, what makes you remarkable?
I trust God beyond what others believe possible.
Even mountains can be moved because of you.
Yes.
Cross-Examination
Yet Paul says that even faith which moves mountains...without love...
amounts to what?
Faith
Nothing.
Witness Four — Tongues
Prosecutor;
Tongues, many see you as evidence of the Spirit's presence.
Yes. I reveal that God is able to work beyond human ability. I can break barriers, demonstrate the Spirit's power, and remind believers that God is not limited by human language or understanding.
Surely that makes you indispensable.
Cross-Examination
"Yet Paul says that even with this remarkable gift, without love ...what do you become?
"A resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."
Loud. Impressive.
But empty.
Final Witness — Love
Defense;
Love...
What do you have to say?
I do not compete with the gifts. I give them purpose.
- Knowledge may fill the mind.
I transform the heart.
- Faith may move mountains.
I move people toward one another.
- Prophecy may speak God's truth.
I determine how that truth is spoken.
- The gifts reveal the Spirit's power.
I reveal His character.
Without me, every gift loses its true purpose.
Closing Arguments
Your Honor,
The gifts are extraordinary.
The church cannot function without them.
They teach.
Serve.
Encourage.
Strengthen.
Surely that is enough.
Your Honor,
The prosecution has described what the gifts can do.
But Paul asks a different question.
What are they worth without love?
The answer has been repeated by every witness.
- Knowledge without love becomes pride.
- Prophecy without love becomes harshness.
- Faith without love becomes empty achievement.
- Tongues without love become meaningless noise.
The gifts are indispensable.
But love is indispensable to the gifts.
That is why Paul calls it "a more excellent way."
Judge -The Word of God
Having heard the testimony,
This court rules that spiritual gifts are precious gifts from the Holy Spirit and are essential to the church.
However...
No gift shall ever claim superiority over love.
For though one may speak with the tongues of men and angels,
Though one may possess prophecy,
Though one may understand all mysteries,
Though one may have faith to move mountains—
Without love, it profits nothing.
Therefore, this court declares:
Love is the more excellent way.
Let every gift serve under its authority.
Court is dismissed.
Outside the Courtroom
"I came believing the church needed more gifts. Today I have learned that even the greatest gift cannot accomplish God's purpose without love."
"And I came defending the gifts. I leave defending something even greater. God's gifts were never meant to compete with love—they were meant to be governed by it."
"So we stand together."
"Yes. We need every gift the Spirit gives..."
"...but above them all, we need love.”
